The 2008 Lexus RX 400h is a surprisingly handsome and sophisticated SUV. It looks like a normal luxury SUV and doesn’t shout about its hybrid status in any way, apart from the grille that serves as the charging point for the battery. Inside, the RX 400h is also discreetly designed, with the only visual giveaway of its green credentials being a small, high-resolution screen located on top of the centre stack that shows what the car is doing at all times (whether it’s running on electric power, the gas engine or a combination of both). The interior is well appointed and seats five in style and comfort, with a 40/20/40-split rear seat that folds, slides and reclines to optimize passenger and cargo capacity. It’s a very quiet SUV, too, thanks to insulated door seals, thick glass and a regenerative braking system that captures energy from the kinetic force of decelerating. Standard fit security features include an immobiliser, ultrasonic alarm and door deadlocking, plus a climate control system with humidity sensor that keeps the cabin cool even on a scorching day.
