In many ways the 2015 Buick Encore exemplifies the current trend toward downsized, economical vehicles with nearly all of the contemporary electronic entertainment, safety, and convenience features standard. Yet, this seriously compact SUV also has surprisingly good steering and handling and is a blast to drive in city traffic and on the open highway. The Encore is powered by the same turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine found in several other GM products, rated at 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available, and EPA fuel economy estimates of 23 city/30 highway for AWD makes the Encore one of the most fuel-efficient crossovers around. Despite its tiny size, the Encore feels solidly planted and well-balanced on the road, thanks to a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear setup. This econo-car handles the rigors of urban driving and even highway cruising with impressive ease.
