The 2015 Fusion Energi stands out like a fresh and charismatic newcomer. Its electric powertrain can give it 20 miles of pure EV range, enough to make many back-and-forth commutes from home or to run some errands without refueling. Plus, when the battery is depleted, it switches to hybrid mode for a smooth and efficient ride. The Energi is one of just two plug-in models Ford currently offers. It's also the only midsized sedan in this price range with a plug-in powertrain. Ford says the Energi will return an EPA rating of 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is better than a regular Fusion Hybrid's 38 mpg. And, if you have a charging station at home, recharging takes just a few hours. The Fusion's standard electric drive system uses an array of energy-saving features to help it go farther on a charge than a normal hybrid would. It incorporates regenerative braking, a motor that generates electricity when the vehicle coasts and an engine that recharges the battery when under light load. Its recharging port is on the left front fender, where it's easy to access when parked.
